Tav, a good friend of mine, wrote this in a card that I now have pinned up above my desk.  Over the last two years, it has served as a huge encouragement to me.  There’s no holdin’ me back world (not even by Jack Bauer):

Listen to the mustnt’s child,
Listen to the don’t’s,
Listen to the shouldn’t’s,
The impossibles,
The wont’s,
Listen to the never haves,
Then listen close to me…

My friend Tav once told me, if you want to hear the truth about something ask a kid.  So I did.  My sister and I sat my nephew down and, sandwiched in between other questions, I got what I was looking for.  The answer to, “Why do people get married?”

Tav:  Where love goes to die.  Or not.

Me:   No, you’re right.  It goes there to die.

Tav:  Where love goes to die.  And rot.  And become food for worms.  And then return as a bright yellow daisy that makes old ladies smile.

Me:  Old ladies who inevitably play “I love you, I love you not” with the daisy petals and end on “I love you not.” Then they all buy cats… lots of them.

Tav:  Rachel, Rachel, Rachel… I pray Santa really brings you something good for Christmas.  Like your first cat…
