Woody Allen just might be my new hero.  You might have to read this more than once to fully grasp the wiseness of it but give it time to set in…

To love is to suffer.  To avoid suffering, one must not love.  But then, one suffers from not loving.  Therefore, to love is to suffer; not to love is to suffer; to suffer is to suffer.

To be happy is to love.  To be happy, then, is to suffer, but suffering makes one unhappy.  Therefore, to be happy, one must love or love to suffer or suffer from too much happiness.”

– Woody Allen, Love and Death, 1975

What I love about Alex Greven is that at age 9, he seems to have relationships all figured out.  I speculate that he is going to turn out one of two ways: 1.  He’ll have the best luck with relationships ever, OR  2. he’ll be divorced 5 times by the time he’s 30.  Either way, there’s something we can all learn from him…

My friend Tav once told me, if you want to hear the truth about something ask a kid.  So I did.  My sister and I sat my nephew down and, sandwiched in between other questions, I got what I was looking for.  The answer to, “Why do people get married?”

Check out the Top 10 romantic comedies (according to the American Film Institute).  I know what you’re thinking, “1931?  I’m not going to watch that.  It’s a silent, black and white film.”  But let’s think about this:  The most romantic movie of all time is a SILENT film.  Apparently actions really do speak louder than words.

  1. City Lights (1931) – Stars Charlie Chaplin and Virginia Cherrill.  Director: Charles Chaplin.
  2. Annie Hall (1977) – Stars Woody Allen, Diane Keaton.  Tony Roberts, Carol Kane, Paul Simon.  Director: Woody Allen.
  3. It Happened One Night (1934) – Stars Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert.  Director: Frank Capra.
  4. Roman Holiday (1953) – Stars: Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Eddie Albert.  Director: William Wyler.
  5. Philadelphia Story (1941) – Stars: Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Steward, John Howard.  Director: George Cukor.
  6. When Harry Met Sally (1989) – Stars Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. Director: Rob Reiner.
  7. Adams Rib (1949) – Stars Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn. Director: George Cukor.
  8. Moonstruck (1987) – Stars Cher, Nicolas Cage, Olympia Dukakis, Vincent Gardenia, Danny Aiello.  Director: Norman Jewison
  9. Harold and Maude (1971) – Stars Ruth Gordon, Bud Cort.  Director: Hal Ashby.
  10. Sleepless in Seattle (1993) – Stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.  Director: Nora Ephron.

The Legend of Zelda used to be one of my favorite video games back in the day when the best gaming system was the old school Nintendo Entertainment System (available 1983 – 1995).  One thing not a lot of people know about me: I love to play video games.  But I haven’t played in awhile and I had long forgotten Zelda… Until a friend of mine sent me this spoof of the cartoon which was no doubt made by a couple of dudes who think they have women all figured out.  It makes me shake my head and sigh…

I was checking out one of my favorite blogs, dooce.com, when I came across this video Heather Armstrong posted.  To me, it’s about unconditional love… in an unconventional sense.  I’m not suggesting that people should start considering inter species relationships (though I have recently been considering looking for a loyal dog rather than a husband), but I do think we can learn a thing or two from this heartbreakingly sweet story.

Paris, je t’aime.

In Aaron’s repsonse to “In a world of arranged marriages…” he referenced the film Paris, je t’aime (2006).  I was curious about it so I looked it up and actually found it to be quite fascinating — both cinematically and thematically.  Eighteen different directors created a collection of short stories about love in the world’s most romantic city, Detroit, MI… just kidding… Paris.
